How do earthquakes work?

I often hear people say thing like, “earthquakes happen when stress is released from the tectonic plates,” but this is very vague and does not help me understand how earthquakes work. Down to the smallest bit of detail, how do earthquakes work?

Chosen Answer:

There are 3 types of plate boundaries. Divergent = Plates moving away from eachother, Convergent = Plates moving toward eachother and Transform= Plates moving alongside eachother. The convection currents are causing the plates to move. When plates move, sometimes the edges could be caught against eachother. That causes the plates to build up energy. When the plates can’t handle all that energy anymore, they give and then the energy is released.
